The rap on June - summer courses and crushed fingers

  • Affirmation: Count your lucky stars!

  • Energy level: Medium
June was a whirlwind of activity.  More busy than when I'm teaching.   I managed to complete two Summer Courses for my Masters and maintain my 4.0 GPA (woohoo).   Starting the second course with four crushed fingers was no easy task.  In between courses I took my English Certification exam to teach high school.

Rewind - 4 crushed fingers?  Yes indeedy... on the last day that I spent with Bob in Austin (between courses) we visited the lake where we were married and enjoyed a lovely picnic and swim.   As we were preparing to leave, my hand was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and Bob did not notice me sweeping the sand off the bed of the truck... WHAM the tailgate was closed on my hand.  How I managed not to have them snapped off was a miracle.  It was a bumpy wild ride to the nearest E.R. - complete with being chased by a State Trooper - uh, my darling husband usually law abiding was frantic to get me to the hospital a.s.a.p. and did not want to pull over for said officer.   However, when he did, he jumped out of the vehicle to tell the officer he couldn't stop his wife needed to be taken to the hospital.  The officer stupidly began to quiz him, so I jumped out of the backseat where I'd been cradling my hand in the ice chest (thank goodness we had that or my fingers would have been history).  All distraught and pleading that I need to get to the hospital.... "Ok, ma'am, y'all need to get back into the vehicle.... and please, drive safely".  With that we sped off.  The first town did not have one an E.R. so we drove on another 5 minutes.   In all the journey took us 30 minutes.   The first thing they did was cut off my wedding ring as it was cutting off the circulation to that finger.  I screamed - the comment was that it was also dislocated, but amazingly after being x-rayed, the staff announced that there were no broken bones:   "You must have very bendy bones" commented the head nurse.   I guess that's why with all the sports and activities I've done in my lifetime, I've never had a broken bone.

However, I had massive tissue damage.  My hand was numb for a week or so and then slowly the feeling came back to parts of my fingers.   I'm still having trouble with the middle finger not bending fully.   Bob was very upset and had my wedding ring resized so that when my hand returned to normal I would be able to wear it again comfortably.
